Feeders & Food Information |
Food and feeders We currently have six feeders in the garden, two seed feeders filled with different varieties of seed, two fat ball feeders, one niger seed feeder and a peanut feeder. We also have a bird bath, very important to have water available. Our main seed feeder is a four port hanging feeder filled with a no mess seed mix, no mess means that the husks have been removed and not No Mess, just less!! The second seed feeder is as pictured, does not seem as popular as the other feeder but that may be due to the variety of seed currently in it and or its location. Our fat ball feeders are very popular with chaffinch's, treecreepers and woodpeckers The niger seed feeder is extremely popular with greenfinchs and goldfinch's, it is a four port model and has very tiny slots in it, to stop the very small seed from spilling out. We have had a variety of peanut feeders currently a green mesh one which seems to work quite well, it is very important to buy peanuts that are free from aflotoxins, they are very poisonous to birds. When we have the time and money we shall be buying a ground feeder cage and feeder for our ground feeding birds, the cage is essential as we have a lot of squirrels who will eat anything and everything, especially if it is easy pickings off the ground. Bird feeders and baths should be cleaned thoroughly on a regular basis to reduce the risk of cross infection, there are a variety of suitable cleaners available from bird feed suppliers. Some of our feeders are protected by squirrel baffles which are effectively large diameter discs which sit on four spigots, when a squirrel tries to climb on, it tilts and the squirrel falls or jumps off, great fun to watch! We tend to buy our bird food in bulk as it works out much cheaper and we can buy better quality at the same price. We store the food indoors in sealed containers to reduce loss through damp and possible rodent attack. There are many places to buy bird food and feeders ranging from your local shop to garden centres to specialist animal feed shops to large organisations like the RSPB and specialist farms in the UK who grow the seed here in the UK, all of these can be found on the internet. If you would like to know more and the suppliers we prefer please drop me an email via the contact link or via the guestbook and I will get back to you ASAP. |
